They develop new Health and Safety laws and standards. Co-enforcers of Health and Safety legislation with Environmental Health Departments. Health and Safety Executive handle high risk and national or very large organisations. Inspect workplaces, investigate accidents and cases of ill health, enforce good standards - usually by advising people how to comply with the law, sometimes by ordering them to make improvements and, if necessary, by prosecuting them. They also carry out research.

Statutory Duties

The Health and Safety Executive is interested in the health and safety of people at work and those effected by work activities and whether or not people may be harmed by the way work is done (such as people who may be affected by a major industrial accident). In some situations, they are also concerned with the way work affects the environment.

The Health and Safety Executive is now responsible for gas safety.
