What they can offer
The Road Safety Unit strives to provide the best possible value
for money for their customer groups, by ensuring a consistent level
of consultation, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes.
They offer expertise, local knowledge and personal services, providing
data led education, training and awareness - raising programmes to
support regional, county and local road safety issues.
The Road Safety Unit offers a selection of training. This includes
a wide variety of driver training courses such as advanced driver
training, minibus driver assessments and training, specific courses
for 17-24 year old drivers, courses for older drivers, driver improvement
schemes, tailor made presentations on various aspects of driving
e.g. winter driving, in-car safety, drinking and driving.
School based INSET and workshops for primary and secondary staff,
packages to support the curriculum, pre-driver education, training
and support for cycle instructors countywide, workshops and training
for pre-school leaders.
The Road Safety Unit manages the school crossing patrol service
within the Hertfordshire Police area.
Statutory Duties
The County Council as the highways authority, has a duty under the
Road Traffic Act 1988 to carry out a programme of measures designed
to promote road safety;
'Each local authority must in the light of studies, take such measures
as appear to be appropriate to prevent accidents, including the dissemination
of information and advice relating to the use of roads, publicity
and education, practical training to road users in any class or description
of road user, in addition to that which they receive whilst using
the road, through signs, signals and other highway traffic emergency
methods'.
Resources and Information
The Road Safety Unit have a wide range of exhibitions, posters and
leaflets focusing on various road safety issues such as car safety,
speeding and eyesight testing.
