Agenda 21

Part of a world wide environmental protection movement initiated by the United Nations at the Earth Summit at Rio, recognises social responsibilities of communities particularly to women and children. Safety being one. All local authorities will have some involvement.

COSHH

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. These regulations require employees to assess risks and impose controls when their employees store handle or use hazardous substances in the workplace. This minimises potential negative health effects.

Consumer Safety Laws

Include the Consumer Protection Act 1987 and a wide variety of regulations, including the General Product Safety Regulations 1994, and a number of regulations which apply to particular consumer products. Many of these laws emanate from Europe.

Dangerous Wild Animal Act

Licences individuals to keep certain dangerous animals.

Enforcement Liaison Officer

A qualified inspector of the Health & Safety executive who as part of his/her duties liases with local authority enforcement officers on matters of Health & Safety Enforcement.

Environment Acts

Protect area from local pollution. Licences certain polluting processes.

Food Safety Regulations

Legislation which defines the standard of hygiene and safe practices that all commercial food operations must achieve.

Geriatrician

A doctor who has reached consultant level with a particular specialism in older people's health.

Health Visitor

A Registered General Nurse who has completed further training to degree level, working with the NHS. They are in charge of primary and secondary prevention for the whole community, are particularly involved with vulnerable groups including children and older people.

NHS Trust

An NHS organisation which is a provider of health care services.

Pediatrician

A doctor who has reached consultant level with a particular specialism in children's health.

Primary Prevention

Involves preventing an accident occurring.

Qualitative Research

Research based on achieving subjective information. Thoughts, feelings and views.

Quantitative Research

Involves acquiring statistical data.

RIDDOR

The reporting of injuries diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations. These regulations require employees to report certain accidents, diseases and occurrences in the workplace. These are notified on a specific form to the Health and Safety executive.

Secondary Prevention

Involves preventing an injury from an accident.

Statutory Duty

An obligation laid down by law

Tertiary Prevention

Involves preventing complications developing from accidental injury.

United Kingdom Central Council

The Nurse, Midwives and Health Visitors professional organisation which is responsible for registering and monitoring of professional conduct.
